Frankfurt. Prof. Dr. h. c. Ludwig Georg Braun, Chairman of the Managing Board of B. Braun Melsungen AG, has been honored with the “BDA Award for Baukultur (“Building Culture”) in Hesse”. This was done “to honor the responsibility and respect he has shown for the inhabitants of the region by providing a high-quality working environment.” This marks the second time that the Association of German Architects (BDA) has singled out the work of individuals, institutions and companies, “each of whom, in their own way, have striven to make good architecture possible, doing a tremendous service for building culture and society as a whole.” B. Braun has been working to promote high-quality architecture for many years now, and its current project aimed at the preservation of the listed Haydau Convent is in keeping with these efforts (see below). On January 29, 2010, Dr. Heinz-Walter Große, B. Braun Board member responsible for HR and Finance, will be accepting this award at the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt on behalf of the company, as Prof. Braun is currently on an extended journey abroad.
For years, the B. Braun medical technology and pharmaceutical company has been a pioneer in the architectural design of its buildings and industrial facilities. Even at the time of its construction in 1992, the company’s new headquarters – based on the competition-winning design by James Stirling – was seen as a new type of industrial structure that successfully integrated architecture into the landscape. “Architecture is an important form of expression for our corporate culture,” says Braun. The company’s identity is experienced not only through its globally successful products, but also through the design of the buildings in which they are produced.
Current construction project – Haydau Convent
In Altmorschen, only a few kilometers away from Melsungen, a 130-room hotel, conference and seminar center is currently being built in the historic Haydau Convent. B. Braun will be using this as an advanced training facility, as well as making it available to other companies and to private individuals on weekends. In order to ensure that the historic structures and modern architecture created a harmonious whole with the listed buildings, B. Braun conducted an architectural competition. “The variety of proposals which we received amply demonstrated that we had chosen the correct path,” said Braun. The winning design was submitted by Hamburg-based architect Jan Störmer. Construction will soon be beginning. The entire project, including the restoration and conversion of the convent’s historic service buildings, entails an investment of more than 20 million euros and will result in the creation of some 60 new jobs.
