IV Drugs

B. Braun supplies drugs for peri-operative application, anesthesia, sedation and analgesia. For lipophylic and/or poorly soluble drugs the Lipuro®-Technology uses a MCT/LCT emulsion (Lipofundin®) as drug-delivery system with the advantages such as reduced pain on injection, optimized lipid metabolism.

The role of, and demand for regional anesthesia will continue to grow as it has became evident that these techniques considerably improve patient outcome. With Lidocaine B. Braun and Ropivacaine HCl B. Braun two of the most used local anesthetics are offered in the user friendly Mini-Plasco connect container.

Nausea and vomiting are distressing and burden some experiences in patients, who suffer from them after a medical interventions. Depending on the stressors inducing nausea and vomiting there are three types: PONV, CINV, RINV. Antiemetics e.g. Ondansetron B. Braun, Granisetron B. Braun are used to treat nausea and vomiting. The choice of antiemetic depend on the cause (e.g. surgery, chemotherapy).

The word originally derives from the Greek antididonai which means “given against”. Antidotes used in the medicine counteract or neutralize the effect of a poison e.g. Naloxone B. Braun counteracts opioid intoxication, Flumazenil B. Braun reverse central sedative effects of benzodiazepine.

Antibiotics are among the most frequently used drugs in intensive care patients, and account for a substantial proportion of drug expenditure in ICUs. Single medical devices and associated equipment require more time, items and manipulations resulting in higher costs, increased risk of administration errors as well as microbial contamination. The use of ready-to-use containers provides the best cost-efficacy administering drugs and avoids medication errors, too.

For the prevention or treatment of thrombosis anticoagulants like Heparin B. Braun are given to patients e.g. with deep vein thrombosis. Heparin inhibits thrombin which is central in the blood clotting process. Thus prevent the formation of fibrin and thins the blood.

In modern anesthesia muscle relaxants are used to facilitate endotracheal intubation and to provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation.

Effective pain management is an important component of postsurgical care. Many patients, however, continue to experience inadequate pain relief. The ideal postoperative analgesic treatment should provide rapid and effective pain relief, have a low incidence of adverse effects, and have minimal impact on major organ systems or no significant interaction with other pharmacologic agents. Paracetamol is such a non-opioid analgesic for an effective pain management in postsurgical care.

The use of a variety of medicines and techniques (multimodal pain treatment) is the most effective way to achieve a good balance between pain relief and the avoidance of unwanted side effects and risks with the aim of preventing unnecessary suffering for the patient. Such an approach leads to earlier mobilization, shortened hospital stay, reduced hospital costs and increased patient satisfaction.
