Onvision is an Ultrasound based Needle Tip Tracking Technology for Peripheral Nerve Blocks that works exclusively with Xperius Ultrasound System and the dedicated Stimuplex Onvision needle. In real-time, Onvision accurately indicates where the needle tip is inside the body, in or out of plane. It helps users to align the needle with the probe in an intuitive and easy to use manner - for improved pain relief and the avoidance of unintended nerve puncture or collateral damage to surrounding tissue or vessels.

Advantages

Ultrasound based Technology for reliable needle guidance

The dedicated Stimuplex Onvision Needle with embedded tip sensor allows the exact detection of the tip location and display this information in real time on the live Xperius Ultrasound image.  Needle tip tracking can be used for 2D Mode with the Nerve 0‑4 cm and the Nerve 4‑6 cm preset on the L12-4 transducer and Nerve 6+ cm presets on the C5-2 transducer.

Technical working priciple

The Onvision system detects the exact location of the Stimuplex Onvision tip sensor using the three dimensional space of the Ultrasound beam. The technology combines ultrasound image data from the ultrasound system with signals from the needle to accurately locate the position of the sensor on the Onvision Needle. This projects the position of the sensor by overlaying a circle over it on the ultrasound image in real time.

Ultrasound based technology to improve accuracy

• Onvision works up to 12 cm
• Onvision is shielded against electromagnetic interferences (EMI)
• Onvision is accurate even when the needle bends

Needle guidance to the point

Onvision is a straightforward-to-adopt ultrasound guidance system that is easy to learn and use. The needle tip position is indicated by circles that are displayed on the ultrasound image. The circles appear automatically when the needle tip sensor enters the imaging plane.

Onvision helps to seeing the needle tip and to master the needle beam alignment in an intuitive and easy to use manner. With Onvision, users experience a real time guidance which empowers them to quickly adopt and integrate PNB into their daily practice – enables more physicians to be proficient in performing PNBs.

Studies and Publications

First studies have been published proving the big potential of Onvision Technology in clinical practice.

Kåsine T et al. Needle tip tracking for ultrasound‐guided peripheral nerve block procedures — An observer blinded, randomised, controlled, crossover study on a phantom model. Acta Anaesthesiol Scand. 2019;00:1–8
The new NTT technology significantly reduced the procedure time and the number of hand movements for ultrasound‐guided out‐of‐plane PNB procedures.

Kåsine T et al. The effect of needle tip tracking on procedural time of ultrasound-guided lumbar plexus block: a randomised controlled trial. Anaesthesia. 2020 Jan;75(1):72-79.
Easier block performance and reduced procedure time support the use of NTT in clinical practice.

G. A. McLeod et.al. An initial evaluation of the effect of a novel regional block needle with tip-tracking technology on the novice performance of cadaveric ultrasound-guided sciatic nerve block.
The study shows that Onvision helps novices to raise their level of proficiency when performing blocks by improving needling tasks and reducing errors.

G. A. McLeod et.al. The effect of an ultrasound‐activated needle tip tracker needle on the performance of sciatic nerve block on a soft embalmed Thiel cadaver. The study could confirm the results from the pilot study. Onvision increases the number of needling steps performed correctly and reduces the number of errors. Also self-confidence score improved.
