Digital Medical Technology
The medical technology company B. Braun has been awarded the internationally recognized ISO 27001 certification. This standard defines how organizations structure their information security processes and reliably protect their systems and products against cyber threats, data loss, and other digital risks. The certification reinforces B. Braun’s commitment to safeguarding sensitive patients’ and health-related data.
“The ISO 27001 certification is a major milestone for B. Braun as a medical technology company with a growing digital portfolio. It demonstrates to our customers and partners that we uphold high standards in information security and take responsibility for protecting highly sensitive healthcare data,” says Ingrun Alsleben, Chief Financial Officer of B. Braun SE.
With this certification, B. Braun emphasizes the importance of information security and data protection. It’s not only about defending against cyberattacks, but also about preventing data loss, manipulation, and unauthorized access. “Doctors, nurses, and patients should know how we protect their data – trust is built through transparency,” says Maria Bürger, Vice President AIS Ecosystem and responsible for automated infusion management systems at B. Braun.
Certifications like ISO 27001 are essential prerequisites for digital trust and offer verifiable security – especially where digital processes directly contribute to patient safety.
The certification covers product and software development processes in the area of active medical devices and automated infusion systems. It demonstrates that all processes are managed within a controlled and certified environment aligned with recognized information security best practices. “The product itself is just one component – we must demonstrate that the entire lifecycle is secure: from development to manufacturing to operation,” says Jörn Lubadel, Global Head of Product Security.
An interdisciplinary team worked across departments on the certification process. Tobias Beer, Chief Information Security Officer, coordinated the project and emphasizes: “Protecting sensitive data is not a solo task, but a shared responsibility. Only through cross-functional collaboration were we able to develop an effective and sustainable solution.”
Going forward, B. Braun will undergo regular re-audits to continuously demonstrate that the requirements of ISO 27001 are met during ongoing operations and system development. “The certification is not a one-time achievement, but a lasting commitment. Operation and continuous improvement are firmly embedded in the standard,” says Ronald Kazmierski, Director IT Governance.
