Excellence in Medical Technology
Three products from the medical technology company B. Braun were recently honored with prestigious awards for product design: the Aesculap® SQ.line® Laparoscopic Clip Appliers and the Aesculap® SQ.line® KERRISON bone punches received the Red Dot Design Award 2025, while the Sol-Can® canister from the Avitum division received the Good Design Award 2024.
"Being an innovative company in medical technology, we aim to develop products with a high design awareness that not only convince functionally but also bring real added value to the everyday lives of our customers – as confirmed by the Red Dot awards," says Stefan Gaßner, Senior Manager Research and Development.
The jury of the Red Dot Award bestowed the highest recognition, "Red Dot: Best of the Best", on the Aesculap® SQ.line® Laparoscopic Clip Appliers. This is the highest distinction of the Red Dot Design Awards – a quality label awarded only to the best products in a category, representing groundbreaking design and outstanding product quality. The jury was impressed: "The Aesculap® SQ.line® Clip Appliers impress with their perfect material quality, ergonomics and functionality. Mechanical stability, tactile feedback and a minimalist, functional design merge in such a way that the instrument is experienced as a natural extension of the hand. The manufacturing quality, consistent ergonomics and attention to detail set high standards for surgical instruments.”
The Aesculap® SQ.line® Clip Appliers are used to apply the corresponding Titanium Ligation-Clips for the closure of vessels and hollow organs. These clips can be used, for example, in general/visceral surgery during the removal of the gallbladder. To improve ergonomics, a handle with a large contact surface has been developed. This handle is suitable for various hand sizes and specifically reduces pressure points during the application of the Ligation-Clips.
The Aesculap® SQ.line® KERRISON bone punches have been honored with the Red Dot Award for their exceptional design. "Functionally sophisticated down to the last detail, these bone punches from the SQ.line series also impress with their high manufacturing quality," the jury commented. The product was developed for spinal and cranial neurosurgery and enables ergonomic backhand and forehand punching. An optimized shape, weight distribution and handle geometry reduce the force required and support ergonomic working conditions. Haptic and acoustic feedback improve control. The mechanism enables quick unlocking with a lever, allowing intraoperative cleaning and machine reprocessing without pre-cleaning.
The aim of making dialysis treatment more efficient, ergonomic, and environmentally responsible was achieved with the new design of the Sol-Can® canister from B. Braun's Avitum division. This was confirmed by the jury of the Good Design Award, who praised the product for its innovative functionality, user-focused features, and compact form. A new, transparent body combined with a clearly structured label simplifies identification and handling, making clinical use safe and more efficient.
The new design enables smooth insertion of the suction rod and reduces the residual volume to less than 50 ml — saving both time and resources. The dome-shaped base allows stable stacking of up to 120 canisters per pallet for enhanced storage and logistics. The ergonomic handle allows nurses to carry two canisters with one hand and facilitates positioning under the dialysis machines. Switching the canister material to fully recyclable PET makes Sol-Can® 56 grams lighter, resulting in over 800 kg of plastic savings per year for an average dialysis center with 100 patients. Improved production processes have also reduced the canister's CO₂ footprint by 17 percent.

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the largest and most prestigious design competitions in the world. The Red Dot label has established itself internationally as one of the most sought-after quality seals for good design. To adequately assess the diversity in this field, the award is divided into three categories: Product Design, Brand and Communication Design, and Design Concept. Each of these competitions is held annually.
The GOOD DESIGN® Award, founded in Chicago in 1950 by design visionaries Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and MoMA curator Edgar J. Kaufmann Jr., is internationally recognized as the global trademark for design excellence. It is the world's first and oldest design award, honoring achievements in all design disciplines, from product and packaging design to communication and service design, as well as architecture and user interfaces (UI) and user experiences (UX). The awards are presented annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
