Welcome to the CNS Lab Fellowship
I am glad to introduce to you the first Computational NeuroSurgery (CNS) Fellowship in the World, a novel fellowship aimed to forge the neurosurgeon of the future.
Macquarie Neurosurgery, Head of the Computational NeuroSurgery (CNS) Lab
This 1-year long fellowship, which is partly funded by a grant from B. Braun, will enable a senior neurosurgery resident or specialist to gain translation expertise in computational modelling and Artificial Intelligence applied to the clinical neurosciences, for a comprehensive study of the brain and diseases of neurosurgical interest. The fellow will be involved in one or more research projects in the new Computational NeuroSurgery field at the CNS Lab of the Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia), in a new vibrant environment with neurosurgeons, clinical and computational neuroscientists, engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, cognitive neuroscientists, and more. Hybrid positions – research and clinical/surgical fellowship – will be considered for eligible fellows accredited with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
„I wish to express my profound appreciation to Prof. Antonio Di Ieva and B. Braun for their strategic investment in this fellowship. While the experience was not without its structural limitations, it proved to be formative in recalibrating my trajectory. These constraints have served as catalysts for methodological innovation, compelling me to develop more dynamic frameworks for bridging theoretical constructs with empirical applications in complex computational ecosystems that increasingly define the intersection of neurosurgery, modern robotics, machine learning, and translational bioengineering.
The experience has crystallized my understanding of the competencies essential for emerging interdisciplinary domains in neurosurgery and the challenges inherent in translating computational advances into clinically viable solutions. This meta-analytical perspective represents perhaps the most valuable outcome of the collaboration.
I remain appreciative of the sponsor’s vision and commitment and the foundation established through this initial collaborative position and I look forward to sustain this in the future.”
Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Eric Suero Molina, MBA, FEBNS, Universitätsklinikum Münster
„During my year-long fellowship at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, I had the privilege of focusing on interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence, particularly its application to hyperspectral imaging. I also gained valuable clinical experience, exploring advanced neurovascular, skull base, neuro-oncological, and spinal surgeries.
One unforgettable and unexpected highlight was participating in a medical mission to the Solomon Islands, where we made history as the first neurosurgical team to operate in the region.
As a co-editor of the published book Computational Neurosurgery, I could consolidate my knowledge and contribute to this evolving field. This fellowship has profoundly shaped my career, fostering growth as a clinician and researcher. My heartfelt gratitude goes to Prof. Antonio Di Ieva and the CNS Lab and all the sponsors who made this fellowship possible.”
