WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellowship in Tübingen

The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) and the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Tübingen are pleased to announce this special fellowship program which is exclusively funded by an annual grant from Aesculap. Each year 4 young neurosurgeons especially from developing countries, will have the chance to be trained in the field of pediatric neurosurgical techniques at the Department of Neurosurgery in Tübingen.

Program information

The Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Tübingen is a large lnstitution which runs a daily surgical program of 10-12 surgeries, or about 3,000 surgeries per year. The Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery runs a busy surgical program and various, often interdisciplinary, outpatient clinics. Children are treated in close cooperation with the large University Children's Hospital and its numerous specialties, foremost Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Pediatric Surgery, Craniofacial Surgery and Pediatric lntensive Care Medicine.
The Fellowship consists of extensive exposure to the whole spectrum and techniques of pediatric neurosurgery including hydrocephalus, CNS tumors, craniofacial surgery, spinal and cranial malformations, spasticity, epilepsy surgery, and peripheral nerve surgery.

Program details

Duration of fellowship will be 3 months
Fellows will be provided with furnished accommodation in a modern small apartment close to Hospital Campus
Fellows will be paid a scholarship of € 1,250.00 per month minus costs for the apartment
The Fellowship does not provide travel expenses
Candidates will be included in all activities of pediatric neurosurgery including surgeries, conferences, clinics, ward rounds, workshops and have access to all other educational activities of the Department of Neurosurgery
Candidates are expected to actively participate in ongoing clinical research and work on an own research project during their stay

Requirements

The ideal candidate is an English or German speaking female or male young post-graduate neurosurgeon from a residency training program or an equivalent program from developing countries who during her or his residency demonstrated good skills in microsurgery. The fellow wishes to subspecialize or to actively concentrate on pediatric neurosurgery in the future. The fellow should have a work experience of no longer than 5 years after concluding her/his residency.

The Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery is a world-class center for brain, spine, and peripheral nerve surgery in children, and as a young neurosurgeon I deeply appreciate the unique opportunity of having learned. After finishing my WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship in Tübingen under the supervision and guidance of Professor Martin U. Schuhmann, Professor Tatagiba, and all of the members of the honorable Department of Neurosurgery and Neurotechnologies at the University Hospital Tübingen, I have improved myself as a neurosurgeon and person. During this fellowship, I learned how to recognize and treat complex pathologies in pediatric neurosurgery and peripheral nerve disorders. Besides, I deeply appreciate the opportunity to observe the most accurate microsurgical techniques and skills from Professor Schumann, and the recognition and management of different diseases.

July - September 2022, Farhan Gulzar, MD, Pakistan

After 4 years as Consultant Neurosurgeon this fellowship was something different, a unique and most useful experience. Professor Schuhmann is a great teacher, always willing to share his hardly gained expertise in practice and clinical research. I observed around 100 cases in my fellowship tenure. Besides the medical part, also the human part of interacting with patients and colleagues was an example for me to follow. There is no dedicated Pediatric Neurosurgery Hospital in Pakistan and through this Fellowship I will do my best to setup a Pediatric Neurosurgery department in Pakistan. I hope that many more like me will have the chance of attending this fellowship.

October - December 2021, Liwven Hernesto Quintana Páez, MD, Venezuela

The specialty of Neurosurgery requires the physician to be up-to-date in knowledge, surgical techniques and technological advances in a field that is rapidly changing in the world. This situation brings as a consequence that Neurosurgeons have to resort to other latitudes, to satisfy their academic needs and then be multiplying entities in each health center in their region, where new specialists are trained, all with the purpose of taking better care for the neurosurgical patient. These are the reasons that prompted me to apply to the WFNS-Aesculap Fellowship at the Tübingen University Hospital. Their attitude to share knowledge and experiences with neurosurgeons from other countries, only with the satisfaction that this knowledge is expanded to other latitudes for the benefit of patients, is not something common in the world.

From July until September 2021, Dr. Imane Bersali from Algeria participates in the WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellowship program at the University Hospital in Tübingen as our 21st Fellow. Originally, Dr. Bersali’s fellowship was scheduled in Q2 2021, which had to be postponed to Q3 due to pandemic restrictions. After Dr. Janvier Hitimana’s participation in the WFNS-Aesculap Adult Neurosurgery Fellowship from January to March 2020, he additionally participated in the Pediatric Fellowship from April to June 2020. We were pleased to welcome him in Tuttlingen in February during his fellowship for Adult Neurosurgery (and before the restrictions of the COVID 19 pandemic came).
