Our commitment to
At B. Braun, we are committed to improving sustainability in kidney care. With over 350 renal care centers worldwide, we understand the environmental footprint of dialysis – and we are taking action to decrease the burden.
We not only manufacture the essential products required for hemodialysis treatments but also operate more than 350 of our own renal care centers worldwide. Our Green Dialysis journey began over a decade ago in Eastern Europe and continues to evolve across our global network.
We are dedicated to reducing energy and water consumption in our centers. To achieve this, we systematically measure, collect and monitor consumption data - enabling us to track progress, identify trends and detect irregularities early. Clear targets for water and energy use, combined with benchmarking across our network, drive continuous improvement and help us implement measures and best practices effectively. Just as we track water and energy use, we apply a similar approach to waste. We separate waste carefully, and we systematically measure, collect and monitor waste data and set clear reduction targets. Benchmarking across our network helps us to evaluate our performance and enables us to implement measures and share best practices to foster ongoing progress.
With the entire operation and process in mind, we implement innovative solutions, for example by using the waste cold from the water treatment system for cooling, turning what would be discarded into a resource.
At one of our newly built renal care centers, we introduced an innovative approach that combines water reuse with energy efficiency. Reverse osmosis waste water is collected in a tank with a heat exchanger and reused for toilet flushing and garden irrigation, while its residual cold cools the server room through free cooling technology.
Free cooling uses available cold sources such as cool outside air or cold water instead of conventional energy-intensive mechanical cooling methods, reducing the electricity needed for cooling.
“Our patients remain at the heart of everything we do. It is our primary goal to provide them with high-quality dialysis therapy. At the same time, we are committed to reducing the negative impact of hemodialysis on the environment – without compromising treatment quality.”
We believe that shaping a more sustainable future in dialysis requires collaboration. That is why we actively collaborate with experts and contribute to initiatives that drive environmental progress in renal care.
One example is our involvement in KitNewCare, an EU co-funded project focused on transforming kidney healthcare into a more effective, accessible and environmentally sustainable model. We also partnered with EDTNA/ERCA in the joint project Green Excellence in Dialysis, which focused on promoting best practices and developing recommendations for environmentally responsible dialysis care.
The transition to more sustainable dialysis is not only about technology – it is about people. Our teams in our renal care centers play a crucial role in turning ideas into action. From monitoring consumption data to implementing innovative solutions, every improvement depends on their expertise, commitment, and creativity.
Engaging staff in the process supports the shift from sustainability as an isolated initiative to sustainability as part of daily routines. By fostering awareness, sharing best practices and empowering employees to contribute, we help build a culture where environmental responsibility is embedded in our daily routines.
“Raising awareness among our staff about the environmental impact of dialysis is essential. To create meaningful change, both awareness and motivation are key. Every employee, regardless of role, can help reduce the environmental footprint of dialysis treatment. Together, we can reduce the impact of our renal care centers and contribute to a healthier future for our patients and our planet.”
